Dear Dr. Andrey Yakovlev,

Dear Dr. Andrey Yakovlev,

It has been an honour to collaborate with Tomsk Polytechnic University, one of the oldest technical universities and one of the leading institutions in the field of Engineering and Technology in Russia and around the globe.

Our cooperation dates back to 2006 when we received the first three students from TPU for internships with our dual partner companies. We soon increased the number of students by exchanging students for study abroad semesters and internships in both countries and by expanding the range of joint activities. We ran successful summer schools both, in Heidenheim and in Tomsk, thus offering more students the opportunity to visit the other country, to get to know the people and to learn more about our respective cultures. Numerous faculty members taught as guest professors at TPU and vice versa, thereby strengthening the academic ties between TPU and DHBW Heidenheim.

I would like to congratulate TPU on the 125th anniversary celebration. I look forward to a continued successful and trustful cooperation with TPU and wish you all the best for the future!

Sincerely,

I would like to say thanks for the sense of purpose that was formed here, in the special environment of TPU...

Of course, student years are one of the most memorable stages in life. It is a period when you begin to form as a personality and get in a professional environment trying to obtain a maximum of new knowledge and skills. You get the first experience of communication with future colleagues, with guys you are surrounded by. After a carefree school period, the other one, adult life comes.

Although having finished school, I did not enter the university immediately. Before studying at TPU, I had finished a vocational school majoring in power engineering and served in the army. Many subjects came naturally to me, some subjects were even transferred, however, some professors said in their traditional greetings on 1 September, “Forget everything that you were thought before!”

Us, some students after the army (there were several people), professors treated in a respected way, they treated us as mature serious guys. We entered the university deliberately understanding what we what to do in our future.

My student years were actually synchronized with very unstable times in Russia, the times of changes. At that time, many people decided that changes must have begun with giving up study. Entrepreneurship was developing increasingly and guys gave up their studies, they began to run business to earn some money faster.

I am very thankful for my fortune that I could study. Of course, I had to work part-time to get my penny. I did not carry heavy bags at the Tomsk-2 Railway Station, but to unload boxes in the evenings that was I did.

I would like to say thanks for the sense of purpose that was formed here, in the special environment of TPU. It always helped me in my life. For instance, I started my working career in a blue-collar job. I worked as an electrician in a housing maintenance company and at the same time studied at TPU. After some time, I became a chief electrician, an engineer, then a chief engineer, after that step by step, I reached the level of Regional Lead in housing and public utilities.

I still remember Ohm’s law.

I would like to add that in any situation, on any level, it cannot be shameful to mention that you graduated from TPU. It sounds proud and makes a special impact on a personality. I am glad that I managed to graduate from TPU.

Youth sometimes share their opinion that social mobility does not work here, in Russia. They want to graduate from the university today and become Vice Minister tomorrow… To be honest, I am very glad that such social mobility does not work. It cannot work, it is my personal opinion.

I think there must be a social ladder. Youth must climb up this social ladder step by step. It is even desirable that they will be kicked downstairs on some flights. If you go up again after, you will prove to yourself and other people that you are a mature personality in your profession and team. You will prove that you are a person with life experience, accumulated practice, somebody who knows his goal and fully contributes to achieving it. The surrounding people may be forced to achieve a goal. They also may be inspired to…

I wish all members of the TPU community to inspire and be inspired! Moreover, I wish everyone to believe in himself, first of all. Do not decrease your ambitions under any circumstances. Go forward and achieve the desired result. There is everything at TPU to become a successful person!

General Director at Taganrog Boiler-Making Works Krasny Kotelshchik PJSC

I am thankful to Tomsk Polytechnic University for solid, fundamental education, wide horizons and deep studying of the major. Professors first cared about our knowledge, fostered our interest in studying and exploring new things. I was the first student at the academic department who began to study steam generators for nuclear power plants. Since that moment, studying nuclear power and plants began to develop at the faculty. It was a topic of my graduate thesis and then I went to deepen my knowledge passing an internship at EMK-Atommash JSC in Volgodonsk, where after my graduation, I was assigned.

A special thanks to TPU for my wife. We studied in one group, in the fourth year of study we got married and have been living in a friendly and close-knit family for 36 years, having raised two children.

In the year of the 125th anniversary of the university, I wish it not to lose its brand! I wish faculty staff to be flexible, permanently change themselves, to be in a search in order to meet the requirements of modern life and graduate specialists with deep and strong knowledge. I wish students to spend every day with a benefit, soak up information like a sponge, and constantly widen horizons. Studying at university is the first stage of independent life. During this period, character formation happens and probably even the formation of a personality does too. The main is that not to be afraid to set high standards and not to set limits for yourself, think for yourself and pursuing your goals.

Dear members of the TPU community, dear friends and colleagues,

On behalf of the Legislative Duma of the Tomsk Region, I am kindly expressing my greetings to you on the 125th anniversary of National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University!

Once reading feedbacks on Tomsk Polytechnic University, I saw the phrase “historically respected university”. It is a very accurate and comprehensive definition of the trustworthiness and significance of the university for Russian and global science. The entire history of the university is a history of achievements, scientific breakthroughs, innovative developments without which it is impossible to imagine the development of Russia.

For me, Tomsk Polytechnic University was and remains a part of my life. I am proud of studying here and now I am teaching at this great university. For me, the classical collocation “alma mater” accumulates all the generosity with which the university shares knowledge, provides maximum opportunities for self-realization, trains to orientate in the modern world and forms a special world view.

Universities are often compared with barometers of the social and economic development of a country. In this context, Tomsk Polytechnic University is a very accurate barometer always forecasting the right weather for tomorrow and building its present and future on the unique combination of traditions and innovations. TPU is high expertise of professors, modern technical equipment for research, a good response to any time challenges, talents and ambitions of students.

Due to all of this, the university always was and remains one of the best in Russia, its students outstand with the quality of professional training and competitiveness.

Happy anniversary, my beloved university! I wish all members of the TPU community new victories in solving the most complicated problems in education, new scientific discoveries, creative self-realization, good health and prosperity!

Despite the challenging 1990s, my student years were the same as other students’ years were with its romance...

Despite the challenging 1990s, my student years were the same as other students’ years were with its romance inherent to life in a residence hall, with aspiration to improve knowledge and marks. I had to learn to be independent very fast but the friendly atmosphere of Tomsk Polytechnic University and the city as a whole helped me. The Siberian Athens, a student capital, these nicknames of Tomsk write themselves. I remember the city for its special atmosphere that having now visited many places of Russia, I have never met anywhere.

I think study years are valuable not only due to knowledge obtained at university but also their role in the formation of a personality in common. I very appreciate the base contributed to me by TPU. In my turn, I am very happy that due to my alma mater, I can contribute a little to the development of the city, where I live and work.

I wish all students of my beloved university persistency in study! At the same time, it is also important to participate in social life, youth movements and volunteering activities. I guess it gives an opportunity to show your best qualities, helps to determine life orientations. Moreover, there is also no need to be afraid to change views and make mistakes. Youth is inherent to make mistakes, the most important is to learn to draw conclusions from them. I am very grateful to TPU, all my professors and Tomsk, the city of my youth, I keep only the best memories about them. I am expressing my greetings to all students and professors on the 125th anniversary of TPU. I wish everyone good luck and more development in scientific achievements! I would like to wish students fair knowledge and professors sympathetic and thankful students!

The 125th anniversary of TPU is a big holiday for me. Our university is a real base for training scientists and experts in the petroleum industry!

For over 30 years, within our research school, methodical work on the development of the catalytic processes for various purposes have been conducted. In Russia and abroad, there are no similar institutions, except TPU, possessing such a body of knowledge on physico-chemical laws of conversion of hydrocarbons and experience of generating intelligent computer systems, as well as experience of manufacturing application!

Mathematical model as a science is based on the optimal ratio of the experimental and computational data. Many phenomena are unavailable for study and mathematical model expands opportunities for research, that allows, for instance, describing the reactivity of conversion of hydrocarbons on various industrial catalysts (the problem of catalyst testing), solving an inverse kinematics problem and determine numeral values of a reaction rate constant, predicting the lifetime of a catalyst. The expected result of the TPU teamwork in this field is the manufacturing application of intellectual catalyst control modules, which were developed within the research school of professors, postgraduate students and students together with technologists and operators of factory plants.

I would like to wish my beloved TPU further prosperity and great success!

To answer the question "What role did TPU play in my fortune?", I will reply shortly and sincerely, "TPU is my destiny"...

To answer the question "What role did TPU play in my fortune?", I will reply shortly and sincerely, "TPU is my destiny". Here, at TPU, I passed the way from a little boy, a school graduate from the village of Novaya Shulba, the Semipalatinsk Region of Kazakhstan to that savant as my friends and colleagues know me. There were a quick rise, horizontal motion, smooth descent, life segments with turbulence on my walk of life, however, fortunately, without any accidents.

My fellow countryman advised me to enter TPI, at that time, he was about to finish his studies at TPI and enthusiastically told me about the university, city, laboratories and professors. I am grateful to this person, who gave me a cue of a lucky choice on my walk of life.

During my study and work at TPU, I met outstanding scientists and teachers, each of them played an important role in my life, academic development and career. First of all, it is Alexander Vorobyov, who became my research supervisor during my postgraduate study and an exemplar for life. It is Yury Pokholkov, TPU Rector. These are Ivan Kutyavin, Vladimir Lukutin, Deans of my beloved Power Engineering Faculty. These are also Ivan Kalyatsky and Alfred Dulzon, Heads of our High-Voltage Engineering Department. I want to say separately about Alfred Dulzon, during long decades, since 1963 and until his decease, he was my closest friend. I learned a lot from him during that time when he was my head for seven years and when he was my subordinate for 14 years and especially during the severe 1990s when he was First Vice-Rector of our alma mater and I was Vice-Rector for Research.

TPU gave me a number of wonderful friends, among them are former staff of the High-Voltage Engineering Department and the TPU Research Institute of High Voltage Yury Kuznetsov, Vladimir Butenko, Vasily Muratov, Vladimir Lopatin, Inna Skvirskaya and Irina Galanskaya.

I always recall with warm feelings my groupmates, many of them were talented people not only at study but also at art (for instance, a saxophonist and clarinettist, guitarist, accordionist, soloist of the TPU operatic group, studied together with us) and at sport. Together with them, being a group leader as well, I experienced all the great things about life in a residence hall, help to countrymen in harvesting and forage conservation, the Virgin Lands campaign of Kazakhstan. All mentioned and not mentioned teachers, now living colleagues and groupmates, I wish good health and longevity! I will preserve the cherished and blessed memory of the departed forever!

In 1978, I began to work at TPU after graduation from the TSU Faculty of Economics being assigned as an assistant of the Economics Department. Since that time, for over 4 decades, my life is inextricably linked to TPU. These are amazingly vibrant, happy and interesting years giving me an avalanche of bright memories, impressions and new knowledge! Exactly here, at TPU, I grew up and established myself as a professor, researcher, having defended first a dissertation and then a PhD thesis and mainly as a personality too. The distinguishing feature of our university and particularly the Faculty of Engineering Economics, the Russian-American Centre, the School of Engineering Entrepreneurship, where I have been teaching for all this time is a special innovative environment, where every initiative is encouraged in every possible way and supported. If you want to improve your qualification as a teacher, learn a foreign language or digital technologies, you have access to everything, just use it, just study! The existence of such an environment allows TPU to be and remain one of the leaders of the domestic higher school, the pioneer in a number of fields. For instance, we were the first among Tomsk universities who began to train international students, implement the programs of academic exchange and 30 years ago began to use Moodle e-learning software and to record online courses.

Due to my work at the university, I could improve my housing conditions and travel around the world: I have been to Cyprus, Malaysia, Korea, Poland and other countries. Moreover, the main thing is that I met soulmates, who became the best friends forever, with whom I am pleased working and having rest together! I recall with warmth performances, concerts, amateur concert parties, festive evenings arranged by the TPU Social Club of Young Scientists, where everyone could show their talents and regular pleasuring with the Russian-American Centre staff. Working for over 40 years at the university is also a special joy from communication with talented, motivated and keen students, many of them became real leaders in their fields and deeply grateful to the alma mater.

Generally speaking, everything I have, everything that makes me happy is linked to TPU. From the bottom of my heart, I am expressing my greetings to my beloved university, its staff, students and graduates on the 125th anniversary! Seneca said, “If one does not know to which port one is sailing, no wind is favorable.” Therefore, I wish everyone to want something more than they have at the moment, set ambitious goals, even if they seem to be unreachable yet, head to them using all the chances and opportunities!

In the year of the 125th anniversary, I would like to wish all members of the TPU community, first of all, health that is important these days. Second, sooner or later, every person must think about his life purpose. It happens very rarely at a young age, however, I would like to wish everyone understand, why you were born. It is hardly possible to fully answer this complicated philosophical question but you can choose a big, worthwhile goal (help humanity and therefore, your closest people and yourself, improve the quality of life of the society, increase security, the security of your Motherland). If you pursue science, you should find your path there. If you are a patriot, you should develop Russian science but, at the same time, you should understand the trends of the development of global science. If you are conferred with the status of Candidate of Sciences, train youth, become a professor and train candidates of sciences. May the TPU community be proud of themselves, the university and Russia. That is what I would like to wish you!

My Meetings with Tomsk Polytechnic University – My Congratulations on Its 125-Year Jubilee.

For the past few years, I have been a member of the International Scientific Council for Tomsk Polytechnic University. However, I have been aware of this great institution of higher learning for a longer time, that is, in my readings and investigations in the preparation of some of our books.

When I was working on the Nikolay Semenov chapter in my book, Buried Glory: Portraits of Soviet Scientists. I found it very interesting that he had some specific connection with TPU. I met briefly Professor Semenov in the 1960s as a student of MSU, and in September 1965, I recorded a long and very interesting conversation with him in Budapest. This conversation has been published in Hungarian, English and Russian. Nikolay Semenov graduated from the university in Petrograd in 1917 (as it was then) and stayed there doing research until the spring of 1918. At that time, he moved to the home of his parents in Samara. The civil war was raging and Semenov joined the White Army. During the next decades, this was a sort of black spot in his biography. To his luck though, he soon deserted the White Army and returned to academia. He got a job doing research and teaching in Tomsk, at TPU! He was successful, even during the short period he spent in Tomsk, he did research and published its results. In 1919, he returned to his parents’ home in Samara.

Another book in whose preparation I met TPU repeatedly was our Science in Moscow. In this book, we demonstrate and narrate the memorials of scientists in Moscow. This includes a bust of Vladimir Obruchev who taught at one time at the Tomsk Polytechnic Institute and another bust of Mikhail Usov who studied there and later returned to become a leading professor. Both these busts are at the Earth Science Museum of MSU. There is then the grave memorial at the Novodevichy Cemetery of Nikolay Chizhevsky who used to teach at Tomsk Polytechnic Institute before he moved to Moscow.

I thought it proper to remember these encounters with TPU on the occasion of celebrating the 125th anniversary of its founding. To me, TPU epitomizes the institution that is thriving on keeping pace with the fast development in the rest of the world. I wish all the best, a glorious continuation of the glorious past, to the institution and the best of health, happiness and professional success to all its students and associates!

I would like to congratulate on the prestigious milestone reached by Tomsk Polytechnic University, namely the 125th anniversary celebration. I know that Tomsk Polytechnic University is the oldest technical university in the Asian part of Russia and one of the leaders in engineering education in the country and around the globe. For this reason, I’m very happy and honoured to have collaborated with you over the years and in particular with Prof. Vladimir P. Vavilov, one of the most important international expert in the context of quantitative infrared thermography.
I wish you the best for the future!
Sincerely.

Anatoly Surzhikov

Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Head of the TPU Division for Testing and Diagnostics, Honoured Scientist of the Russian Federation

For over 50 years, I have been together with Tomsk Polytechnic University. The university is my home...

For over 50 years, I have been together with Tomsk Polytechnic University. The university is my home, I cannot imagine my life without it. It gave me everything!

Back at school, I determined my two main preferences in choosing my future profession: ichthyology and physics. It happened under the influence of two feature films having great success Amphibian Man and Nine Days in One Yearabout nuclear physicists. By finishing school, it became clear that underwater diving with my bad visual perception is problematic and I had to say “goodbye” to my dream.

By that time, my uncle had graduated from the TPI Faculty of Physics and Engineering. My neighbour also studied there. They told me a lot about the city, romance of the student life, prominent university professors. Following their examples, I was enrolled at the TPU Solid-state Physics Department with the specialization in Radiation Physics.

All things happened but only good memories come to my mind and even when bad memories come to my mind, they come with a laugh. We studied Theoretical Physics that was extremely difficult. Not all students passed the exam the first time. After several unsuccessful attempts to pass the exam, one of our groupmates found the home address of the professor and came to visit him. The professor gave the student a cup of tea and then suggested him to listen to how he played the squeezebox. After playing the squeezebox for a long time, he asked whether the student liked. Of course, the student began to admire him. “If you like, visit me the next time to listen to the squeezebox again,” the professor invited him. Finally, only after three such “concerts” our music lover got his hard-won satisfactory mark.

In the second year of my study, I began to work in the Research Laboratory for Electronics, Semiconductors and Dielectrics. Most of my coursemates became engaged in research work during studying at the university.

Of course, our level of knowledge and skills left much to be desired but we were in the environment of the academic staff and it bore its fruits. By the time of graduation from the university, I already had some scientific background: two applications for inventions were submitted. As the image of a “true physicist” required, I grew a beard, learned how to play preferans, drank cheap wine, argued about the grandeur of physics and mentioned the great physicists in a chummy manner.

At that time, there was a rigid system of graduates’ employment with the necessary working for at least 3 years. Employment in the academic department was extremely complicated but very prestigious.

Therefore, I am very grateful to my teachers, the beloved university selected me among all applicants. Since that time, for over 50 years, I have been together with Tomsk Polytechnic University. I have never had another place of study or work. The university is my home and it is impossible to imagine my life without it. It gave me everything!

All my friends except school ones are from TPU. All these years, my research work has been related to one research team, the staff of which changed several times. However, the traditions, set by Professor Alexander Vorobyev, are still alive. With this research team, I have passed the path from a laboratory researcher to Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, a laboratory research supervisor. The university also gave me an opportunity to fulfil my potential in managerial work as Head of the academic department, Dean and Director of the institute. Here, at TPU, I have met my life partner, who was a student at the Mechanical Engineering Faculty.

On my advice, my two brothers, sister, daughter, niece graduated from TPU too. They also remember the alma-mater with warmth. All of them have a successful professional life.

The TPU main building and academic building No. 8 are two places at the university arousing my special feelings. I arrived at the main building from the railway station for the admission. It impressed me by its architecture, solidity, it trilled me. Now, I am walking in its halls with big pleasure.

Academic building No. 8 is a special milestone in my biography. From 1996 to 2010, I was Dean of the Automation and Electromechanics Faculty, Director of the Electro-Technical Institute, which were located in that building. Our team put a lot of energy in its reconstruction, creation of the study and laboratory base, scientific base, in team creation! I remember every corner and everything related to it, all my colleagues, with whom we worked and created together.

This year, our university is celebrating its 125th anniversary. Of course, there were challenges and problems during its long history. TPU like a locomotive has always run forward, grinding with its “wheels” all bad things that the life put on the “rails”. I am sure that our inexhaustible human resources, our optimism, time-honoured history and the amazing team will allow us to successfully overcome all hardships and will make TPU truly a great university. Happy anniversary to all of us!

Professor of TPU, Doctor of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences

The current year, 2021, is distinguished by a number of memorable anniversaries: our beloved Tomsk Polytechnic University is celebrating the 125th anniversary, 125 years has passed since radioactivity was discovered, Siberian geological education is turning 120 years and the first uranium geologists graduation is turning 65 years. I am proud that I am closely connected to all these dates as I graduated from the TPI Geological Prospecting Faculty and became a uranium geologist. My whole life is related to uranium geology, from the moment of its formation, decadence and revival of this major. I am deeply grateful to all my teachers, mentors, colleagues and like-minded people, who I met at the alma mater and who helped me on my professional and scientific walk of life, in public work.

I am happy to see the fruits of our joint work in the form of the Walk of Geologists and Uranium Geology International Center. We are currently preparing a gift from the TPU Alumni Association for our beloved university, a sculpture of a student of the TPI first graduation that took place at the beginning of the last century. Famous sculptors of Tomsk are already working in their workshop rooms to implement the project and we are preparing a place to install the sculpture. We want that it will be popular among students, TPU graduates, Tomsk citizens and city guests. From the bottom of my heart, I am expressing my congratulations to all TPU community on the anniversary of our alma mater!
